DANGAR ISLAND BEACH HUT
This little cottage on Dangar Island was very quaint but an "asbestos nightmare".
After months of careful planning, the fantastic team of builders from "down the river" arrived on their boat and took anchor in the bay.
As Dangar Island is "car free", every last skerrick of asbestos had to be carefully bagged and taken away by barge. The same barge brought back just about everything for the rebuilding.
Most of the interior walls were also removed and beautiful steel-frame windows replaced the decaying wooden frames. Just one window was kept for sentimental reasons and painted in the deep red that was going to appear in the furniture.
With "Smart Glass" in the windows the little slow combustion stove warmed the whole house without the need for curtains "to keep the heat in".
The garden was completely overrun with all manner of noxious weeds and it took a couple of years of hard work by a couple of locals to reclaim a very beautiful space. With the establishment of local native plants, the birds returned and Birdsong Cottage deserved its name.
